Tonight, as I was straightening up the house I got to thinking about what I love about FLYlady's method of cleaning the home and what has kept me doing things this way for many years ~that is, rather than whining and complaining about all the things we don't have or want to have, we should spend more time and energy being content and grateful for we already do have and taking good care of them. This brings peace to a home~ the refuge we all go back to at the end of a stress-filled day.
I've posted a couple pictures taken tonight, one of my shiny sink and the other of our (one and only) tiny bathroom. Neither is fancy, both need some repair if not a complete makeover, but they're mine and I take pride in making them clean.
The sink is the first thing I see when I go to make coffee in the morning. I don't have a dishwasher (never have had one unless you count me!) so keeping a kitchen that is clutter free, clean and ready to use takes a little extra time in the evening but the payoff comes when I don't have a pile of dishes and work greeting me when I'm still struggling to wake up.
The bathroom needs a lot of repair~ like a new shower, new heat registers,.. actually the whole thing should be replaced and a second bathroom built! But this is all I've got for now, so I do what I can to make it comfortable~ nice rugs, a candle, nice soaps, bright colors, and disinfected/shiny/clutter free surfaces each day.
It doesn't seem like much, but these are just two little things that make our mornings less stressful and help get everyone off to a smooth start.
Another is having my 8 year old son's clothes picked out and his backpack ready the night before. We've done this consistently for several years and have never had a "bad morning" where we were running late/missed the bus/panicked/lost my cool! (I've accidentally slept through the alarm once or twice, but that was more from being exhausted by a new baby, not being ill prepared for the morning.) The kiddo likes that every morning is exactly the same, everything done at a specific time~
wake up at 6:45 am
bathroom, dressed, shoes on by 6:55
breakfast until 7:10
face washed, teeth brushed, hair combed, ears swabbed, nails checked by 7:15
then coat & backpack on and waiting for the bus by 7:20
On the bus at 7:25-7:30
Everyone else in the family has their own specific bathroom time and morning schedule to keep.
My efforts at keeping things running smoothly benefits all of us, which is why I'm most likely going to be doing things the FLYlady way forever. It works.
